About Ellen Hopkins:
Ellen Louise Hopkins is a New York Times Bestselling author. She is well known for her books entitled Crank, Burned, Impulse and several others. She is a favorite author for both young adult and the teenage readers.
Early Life
Ellen Hopkins is a self-confessed adopted child of Valeria and Albert Wagner. She is born on March 26, 1955 and her adoptive parents were already old, with her mom 42 years old and her dad at 72 years old. She conceded that it was definitely a challenge living with older parents along, of course, with lots of wonderful benefits. It was reported that by the year 2000, Ellen Hopkins finally found her biological mother, Toni Chandler who was also a poet and a writer, just like herself.
When asked if her talent for writing was inherent or nurtured, she directly answers that it’s both. Of course, as a natural daughter of a writer and a poet, she believes that this talent and gift runs through her too. And she also believes that this talent was nurtured further by her adoptive parents. Valeria, read to her children’s stories each night and by the time she was in pre-school, she was already reading chapter books. Thus, from her adoptive mom she learned to love language. Then from her adoptive father, Albert, she learned a lot of values especially the value of honesty and a strong work ethic—which pretty much comes out in her writing.
She has a younger brother named Albert Jr. who was also separately adopted. For her, high school life was mediocre and most of her high school friends are actually also interested in creative pastimes like choir, creative writing, theater and dance—which suited her perfectly fine. As for sports, she was not really interested in it and at best she was just mediocre.
As for college, she took up Journalism at UCSB but was not able to finish it because she decided to get married. By that time, she started a business and already has three kids namely: Jason, Cristal, Kelly and an adopted son named, Orion. Orion was the inspiration and is actually the basis of the baby character in Crank. Unfortunately, the marriage did not work out. Second Marriage and Beyond
In 1984, Ellen Hopkins finally met John, her current husband until now. From there, she decided to have a fresh start by selling her business and pursuing her relentless dream of a career in writing. They moved to Tahoe, where Ellen started to do freelance writing for magazines and newspapers.
The idea for writing children’s books came to life when she visited the Air & Space Smithsonian in 1998, where she saw the museum’s showcase on Women in Aviation. This inspired her to create a children’s book based aviation. So by the year 2000, Ellen was already able to publish two children’s story books the High Seas Superman and Air Devils and Orcas. After that, she was able to crank out 20 more children’s books and by 2002, she decided to create a novel that was inspired by her daughter’s addiction to crystal meth.
As for her children, they are grownups now and are already living on their own in San Antonio, Las Vegas and Albuquerque. We try to have a get together at the very least a few times a year and almost always this falls on a holiday.
Currently, Ellen is living with her husband, John Hopkins, and her adopted son Orion at the beautiful and scenic Washoe Valley in the state of Nevada. During her free time she loves to spend it with her family and engage in activities like gardening, camping, fishing, skiing, biking and hiking. She also loves taking care of her pet German Shepherds.
Meeting Her Publisher and Her Career
Ellen Hopkins first met Julia Richardson, who would soon become her editor, at a book festival. Ellen gave Julia the first few pages of her writing, which would soon be published as Crank. Julia liked what she read and took the liberty of getting it published. By October 2004, Crank hit the stands and by six weeks within the market, it soared up to the top ten lists. Ellen was really ecstatic with the public’s huge acceptance of her debut novel which is written in a distinctive poetic tone. The follow up book of Crank, entitled Glass, also garnered huge acclaims from the reading public and has touched the lives of the readers across oceans and continents.
Ellen’s other highly acclaimed novels are: Identical, Impulse and Burn are likewise amongst the top ten bestselling lists but are completely about diverse subjects.
Excerpts and Reviews of Crank.
Crank was the first novel that Ellen Hopkins wrote and was published in October of 2004 with the help of Julia Richardson, her editor. The book quickly gained a top spot on the bestselling list because of its honest and true to life portrayal of a good girl’s addiction to crystal meth, the book’s interesting format and the timely subject matter which is close to many parent’s dilemmas and even young adults can relate to the timely subject matter.
According to Ellen, her first novel, Crank, was borne out of the frustration about her daughter’s addiction to methamphetamine. It was an honest self-exploration of a mother, trying to answer unanswerable questions with regards to a daughter’s addiction, the justifications and the blames.
Crank was written using the point of view of “her daughter,” this way she was also trying to understand and learn what addiction is using the point of view of her daughter. This way she learned a lot about her and the struggle that comes with the addiction.
All in all, the book is a good read because it is a topic that is close to the heart of many young adults and parents alike. It helps them learn how the substance work and helps them adjust to the devastating emotions involved in the struggle and most of all it helps them realize that kicking the habit cannot be forced on the addict—but the addict should want it as well. With the many questions that readers have addressed after reading the book, especially the recurrent question of what happened to Kristina, Ellen created the sequel Glass. Customer Book Reviews
This is my honest review of this book so here I go. I know that this book is of the lives of these teens that were brought into the sex trade in one sense or another .the writing of this book was easy to follow too. I'm giving it a 4 not for the fact of its content but because I didn't feel they gave these subject enough information. there are many forms of sex trafficking here in this world some are by choice some are not .these children grant it left home or were thrown out but still made the chose to follow down the path they chose. This I don't feel sorry for I'm glad they got out of the life. but when I think of trafficking it's of the ones that had no choice that they were push, stolen, hurt, etc In to the life. these are the ones I pray to God above for help and guidance ,so I enjoyed the story of these teens and I'm happy they got help because there are a lot of services out there for drugs, rape, prostitution, etc. and this does show another part of the sex trade. my opinion is my opinion and you should read this for your opinion we all have one and should use this to make our own opinions of this book. please enjoy for I did for the story of this subject.
This book is quite the read, I hate to admit that I went into this a little blind. I had not read the first book in the series, Tricks, but after doing a little research I knew that I had to go into this book carefully. This was going to be a book that I normally wouldn't pick up on my own (we all know I am a happy go lucky HEA kind of reader), it was going to be a book that would pull at my heartstrings in an ugly momma cry sort of way, it would chew me up, spit me out, and then stomp all over me long after I cried UNCLE. Interestingly enough I was both wrong and right about my feelings toward this books I turned the first page. What made me wrong: First, Ellen Hopkins writing style, prose has a way that draws you quietly into the story. It allows the reader to glide through he pages, internalize the feelings, but let the harsh words and reality flow through your mind in such a way that you aren't left completely broken, Had any number of other authors written this book it would have left the reader with a gritty, dirty, hateful, angry type of feeling because that is what this book is. It's dirty, it's scary, it will leave you angry and hurt, sad and aching but Ellen is, through her mastery of prose, able to make it something beautiful at the same time. She is able to give this dark almost secret topic light...to bring something taboo into the forefront of your mind and make you think. It makes you want to remember what you just read because while it will sit heavily in your heart her words allow it to sit there in a comfortable spot with a beautifully glowing sign that asks you 'How can I help them'? So this book, it will chew you up and spit you out, it might even do a quick little jig over your remains before you are done, BUT it does know the meaning of calling out UNCLE. We all know I am a happily Ever After girl and in the end that is what this book is about. Yes, the happily ever afters may not look as pretty and shiny as one from a contemporary romance for example. There isn't a couple running off into the sunset on the back of a Harley with all their friends waving and cheering for the love the main characters found. But there is love, there is peace, there is happiness to be had for these children and their families. It is a long road and it is clear that their recovery does not end with he final page of the book, and that is as it should be. These children have been used, abused, brutalized, forced to age beyond their years, traumatized, and victimized. These children will NEVER be the same, but the fact that they will one day find peace, happiness, and love brings us full circle because in the end that is all they ever wanted to begin with. Yes, these children have to take responsibility for many of their actions, but they are not to blame for what happens to them. I think this is something that we as a society manage to gloss over, mainly because it hurts to see the truth. Yes these children at times made bad choices (don't we all?) but each one of them was already a victim, each one of them were left to make decisions they were not equipped to make and forced to find ways to save themselves because no one else was willing to save them. We forget that Human Trafficking isn't just something that happens randomly, that a person isn't always snatched out from underneath us all, stolen away, and forced into life of degradation and depravation. We forget that the life of the teen next door could easily find themselves in a position that they have no control over and no understanding of how to escape from. What made me right: This is a rough read, there is no other way to say it. This topic is painful and brutal. This is not a book for the light hearted. You are going to ache for these characters, you are going to cry for them, you are going to get angry at them, you are going to want to save them. This isn't a book filled with sunshine and lollipops, but it is a book filled with a beauty you wouldn't expect. The beauty of these children (not with out assistance) saving themselves. The process is painful for all involved but the reward of a future at the end for these characters makes the story so worth reading...if the topic itself wasn't enough of a reason. There is no easy with this book, it is clear that Ms. Hopkins put not only a great deal of love into this story but a whole heck of a lot of research. The fact that we are getting this story from five very different teens makes it that much more compelling....it is a reminder that this isn't the story of randomness, but the story of teens every and any where....a few bad choices, a difficult situation, a craving for love...so many ways that one of these teens could be ANY teen. These are difficult stories being told, there it is. This is not a book to go into lightly. This is a book that will have you reading with a heavy heart, but this is a book that is worthy of the time and the emotions. I do suggest reading Tricks first, because while this is a book of hope in the end all of these children got to this place through a series of events and those events all occur in Tricks. This is also not what I would call a 'linear' story....you will bounce back and forth between the five main characters so getting to know them in book one is crucial to your feeling for them and being able to keep up with them in book two. ***IF you have triggers to abuse, rape, death, drug abuse...go into this book with caution!*** ***This book while a YA, is book for MATURE YA readers. Please do not let your 13/14 year old pick up this book and read it alone if at all. Heck I'd like it if parents read it with their 17 year olds. There is a lot that goes on in these books and a lot of it is ugly and painful and brutal, there is a lot to process and a lot to talk about!
I received a galley from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Those are the only kind I write, so here it is... I was so glad to hear that Ellen Hopkins continued the stories she began in Tricks. I was in awe of that dark, unhappy piece, and although I would read it again, I found myself reading back to back children's fiction afterward, to sort of cleanse my mind I guess. Well, it worked...so I came back, for Traffick. Traffick was a much-needed continuation novel. The teens in Tricks were each left in limbo--their current lives all sucked, but their futures were not yet written(literally). Each one had a chance at making it out, making it back, or making it over. I NEEDED to know what happened to them. I NEEDED at least one of them to be okay. Well, that's a lie. I was hoping Eden, Seth, Whitney, Ginger, and Cody had each, in some small way, gotten a foot or a hand or a push, up. And Ellen Hopkins delivered. In a big way. I think I read Traffick in two days, like binge-watching an entire season of your favorite Netflix series. So, did I get my closure? My not- happily-ever -after but for some, if not all, a little wobbly light to show them the way...and dammit if that beacon didn't just get stronger, and stronger, and stronger... Let me explain it this way: When I finished reading Tricks, I felt like I was stuck in a rest stop bathroom--you know the smell. No amount of handwashing can get it out of your nose. When I finished reading Traffick, it was more like I was inside a Walmart restroom--my nose wasn't crying, but there was a little something gross on my shoe--ah, but it was only a square of toilet paper. And it was unused. And did I mention--the restroom door was not only unlocked, but open, just a tad. That was enough.
TRAFFICK was an amazing book. 5/5 stars, for sure. First off, it is raw and honest and does not flinch from the truths that encompass Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking in the US. It is clearly well-researched and, from an adolescent development and psychological well-being standpoint, it is on point and accurate in every feeling, every thought, every action the characters take. Like all of Ellen Hopkins
Review originally posted @ http://feelyourbooks.blogspot.com This is the sequel I never knew I needed, and I don't believe words could fully express how grateful I am for it. Tricks affected me so deeply when I first read it. I sobbed nearly the entire way through it as I followed each of these young characters through their descent into desperation and the twisted world of sex trafficking. A few years later I decided to try rereading it, that time only weeping soundlessly most of the way through. I considered another reread, for a refresher, before picking up the sequel, but I decided against it. It wasn't really necessary anyway. I know these characters. I care so deeply for them--couldn't forget them if I tried. And I was just ready to learn what their fates held beyond rock bottom. I figured I'd cry while reading this book, but this time they were all happy tears. The journey up from hell isn't paved with flowers, but when these people you've come to care about start to find love and begin to heal it just feels so good. So deserved. Each of these five characters must face their hideous pasts to move toward a better future. On the way, we follow them through rehab and a search for love and understanding. While one character struggles with PTSD and drug relapse, another finds independence through volunteering to work with other LGBT youth like himself. They experience losses and missteps because they're human. But, in the end, they learn the skills and build bonds that let us know that they'll be okay. We don't have to worry about them anymore. The topic of child sex trafficking isn't talked about enough in the world. We need more education, support, and understanding to stop it altogether. Its victims deserve a chance at life and should never be criminalized. This series remains my favorite by Hopkins. It says so much with so few words. And I hope it reaches other young people and starts conversations that really hit deep and inspire change.
There's so many reasons that I love Ellen Hopkins's books. First, I love her writing. Novels written in verse are hit and miss for me, but I can always count on her books being a hit. Second, Ellen's books deal with heavy issues. Traffick (and Tricks) deal with sex trafficking of minors. Third, not only does she tackle heavy issues, she shows them in such a realistic and raw light. There's definitely not any sugar coating here. While Tricks focused on the individual characters, Traffickgives us the broader picture about how each teen's actions have affected their families and friends. We're finally able to see how each character is moving on with their lives and the challenges that they face. It was a fantastic and much needed follow up to Tricks. And, just in case it's needed, Traffick deals with heavy stuff and could be triggering for some. You can expect rape/abuse, drugs/substance use, LGBT-phobia, and death. * This book was received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. *
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and I've always loved Ellen Hopkins' writing. The different POV's in the book helped move it along and hearing everyone's story made it more personal in a way. I never read Tricks, and perhaps I should have read it before reading Traffick, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary in order to understand and appreciate the story. Highly recommended.

As always, Ellen Hopkins is an amazing author and I love this book!
LOVE ELLEN HOPKINS!
‘How am I supposed to stay clean when the truth of what I’ve done closes in around me, squeezing hideous memories from the deep recesses of my brain […]’ Tricks is a novel that leaves you haunted for a group of incredibly real individuals that wound up in unimaginable situations. It told the story of five individuals: Seth is kicked out of his home after his father finds out he’s gay. Ginger is forced to run away after she’s raped and finds out that her mother collected cash from the experience. Eden is sent to a religious reform camp after her parents discover she has a boyfriend. Cody and his family find themselves in a financial hole after the death of his stepfather and he begins collecting money anyway he can. And Whitney who ends up with an older man simply because he gives her the attention she craves. What’s most shocking is how vastly different their stories are yet how they all seem to wind up in the same situations: selling their bodies in order to survive. Traffick is their follow-up story that once again forces these same characters to face their demons while giving them the opportunity to find some semblance of a future that none of them ever thought they would live to witness. It’s no doubt a bleak tale but it effectively brings to life the harsh realities of sex trafficking and child prostitution and what many are forced to undergo. It also productively breaks many of the stereotypes surrounding the beliefs regarding how individuals find themselves in these situations. They aren’t all doing this work of their own free will, some are forced into it by intimidation, some do it out of a misguided act of love, and some do it out of sheer desperateness and being unable to do anything else with their lives. Ellen has said that she worked with rescue groups and survivors of sex trafficking to make this story as honest as possible, and it’s obvious. While Traffick doesn’t give these victims a complete happily ever after, I appreciated it more because it didn’t. What these individuals endured is something that will stay with them eternally and forever change who they are. What this story did do was give these characters, and any individuals that find themselves in similar circumstances, the possibility of hope. Hope that there is a future for them, no matter what, despite their experiences.
My all time favorite author and this book was incredible. An honest and insightful view into human sexuality trafficking. As a survivor of it myself, I found this book hitting so close to home. One of the characters had such a similar story to my own and I can't believe how well the author captured the essence of life as a sex trafficked person. Absolutely wonderful. And I'm so glad to have finally found out what happened to all the characters after Tricks! Can't wait for the next book!
This was a gift for my best friend who is addicted to the author and this series. I've yet to delve into it but I can say from how happy he was to add this to his collection that any fan would be ecstatic. With such a rave review from him I am certain that I will have to get into this and see for myself why it is so popular.
Love Ellen Hopkins, I was so excited for this release and out of all of her books she's written, I felt I had the most closure with this one. It really just gave all the characters a relieved bow and closure for all the hardships they endured from Tricks to Traffick. It was a great sequel and I can't wait for more to come !

Traffick just didn't do it for me. I was surprised because I really liked Tricks. I suppose because it was about recovery and redemption, therefore the drama factor was low. It just didn't grip me like her other novels.
I have read every single one of Ellen Hopkins books and this book is another reason why I will continue to pick up whatever book she writes. This book is about sex trafficking, and while some people may not feel comfortable with the topic, it could be worse, if that makes sense. Ellen covers the very surface of sex trafficking: drugs, rape, the legal aspect, basically it is not as graphic as speaking about sex trafficking could be. The imagery and words Ellen uses allows you to connect to the characters. Personally, I related to two of the characters (Eden & Ginger), more so because I thought they were truly forced into the life. If you are familiar with any of Hopkins previous books, this is written in the same type of format, and she has a way of writing about difficult concepts and making it a learning experience. At this point, I will stop babbling. If you have read Tricks, then pick this sequel and find out how the 5 teens come back from their life of tricking.

I bought 'Traffick' for my niece for a Christmas gift. She had asked for the entire collection of Ellen Hopkins books and this was my contribution. She received all of them and is very pleased. However, I don't think she's had time to read mine yet, as she is reading them in order of how they were written in order to follow a particular storyline for all the characters in Hopkins books.

I had no idea there was going to be a sequel to Tricks. I logged on to Amazon one day and it was on the front page that I could preorder (which I did immediately because I am obsessed with Ellen Hopkins' work). At first, I had to pump myself up to read it. Please don't think I thought it would be bad! If you are familiar with this author, you know the emotional roller coaster of her novels. It's just something I have to prepare myself for whenever I start a new one. Traffick did not disappoint me one bit. Everything flowed flawlessly and I was completely absorbed into the story. It was not an easy read though, oh no. Every few chapters I had to put it down just to absorb everything and bring my brain back to reality. I just loved it! I'll read it again, I know I will.
I spent my weekend reading Tricks, and Traffick. Ellen's books are amazing and always leave you wanting more. She has a wonderful way with words.
Hopkins uses sexual encounters as fillers. All her books follow the same pattern. Not really impressed with her as a writter. Eh...
Ellen hopkins is a fantastic writer! Good book!
Gripping
I love Ellen Hopkins. I find that she is a genius when it comes to writing and she has this incredible ability to to reach many age groups with her writing. The style in which she writes makes any one able to follow the story so well, and she brings all the charters to life in such a way that you feel like you know them personally. And I love that she isn't afraid to write about the 'hard stuff' that is going on in the world that effects everyone one way or another. Anyway, this book was just as incredible as I thought it would be. I don't expect anything less when it comes to this author :)
